Deutsch (German)
Germany, Austria, and Switzerland's shared language
German is a West Germanic language with well over 100 million speakers, official in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, and widely spoken in parts of Belgium and Italy. It's one of the most common target languages for African diaspora communities in Europe, and one of the most economically significant languages for business and study abroad.
Writing system
What counts as correct
German writing relies on umlauts — ä, ö, ü — which shift a vowel's sound and can change a word's meaning entirely ("schön", beautiful, versus an unmarked "schon", already), plus the ß (eszett) character used in place of a double s in specific contexts.
Why it matters
Precision, not approximation
Dropping an umlaut in German doesn't just look wrong, it frequently produces a real but different word. Itumo checks that every umlaut and ß lands correctly, whether German is the source language or the target.
